Pilates is a form of exercise that focuses on balance, posture and strength to improve your core muscles whilst making you more flexible. It is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels.
The instructor for our Pilates group is fully qualified to lead the groups but is not a member of Waterlooville u3a. She carries her own public liability insurance as an instructor. However group members also have public liability insurance cover via their membership of Waterlooville u3a and its affiliation with the national u3a and Third Age Trust. Each weekly session is 60 minutes long and all group members share the costs of hiring the hall and the instructor.
Pilates 1 was our first such group and started up in October of 2013. It is still going strong and the popularity of Pilates is so great that we now have several groups that meet on different days and times. These groups mostly operate at full capacity but we always hold a waiting list of members interested in joining the group so when a space arises it is offered to the member who is at the top of the list.
Tai Chi is a series of movements and poses that originated in the Orient. It is a system of self-development with relaxed, fluid movements and recognised as being good for stress, balance, blood pressure and general health. It is a meditative form of exercise to which practitioners attribute physical and spiritual health benefits. Some studies have found the practice to reduce stress and relieve certain ailments.
The ten pin bowling group started in February of 2014. We meet every Thursday afternoon, and usually finish by 4pm. We pay a concessionary rate per person for two games. We avoid playing during school holidays as it can get very busy and noisy then! Parking is free for up to four hours.
Enquiries : Email groups@waterloovilleu3a.org.uk Visit the Groups Table at a Coffee Morning or General Meeting If the group is full, your name can be added to the Waiting List and you will be offered a space when you reach the top.
This group started in Jan 2006.
The group currently has a total of around 50 members although not everyone attends every walk. Our walks are about 5 miles long and 2 hours or so duration. We like to have a good chat along the way and also to enjoy the scenery and points of interest.
Forget the stereotyped image of cowboy hats and boots, Line Dancing is a choreographed sequence of steps done in lines and to music. It covers many genres of dance, including Ballroom, Latin, Irish, Scottish and more.
It's great fun, excellent exercise for both mind and body and very sociable. It helps both coordination and balance and is a good all-round mental workout too. You don't need a partner or special clothes - you may be on your own but it's not a solitary activity.
This group is suitable for those who have a bit of Line Dancing experience under their belt but are not too serious about it.
We go through several dances each session, some slow, some fast and regularly add new ones to our repertoire as we go along (that's when we all end up facing different directions!).

The group follows Yang Family Tai Chi Chuan 88 Form, also known as 108 Form. Each class begins with Qigong exercises and then continues to practice the Tai Chi moves, working through the Form.
Some prior experience of Yang style Tai Chi is needed in order to join this group - unfortunately, it is not suitable for beginners or those new to Tai Chi.
