We meet every Wednesday morning, during school term times. In the summer, we try to get outside to draw in the open. We use a variety of media, including pencil, charcoal, pastels, water-colour pencils, etc. to produce our drawings and we use videos and books, as well as advice and support from each other, to help us improve our skills. We are a friendly and chatty group who make new members very welcome.

The Collectables group enables anyone with a collection of anything to share and enjoy whatever it is they collect. The term collectables covers practically any item of any material of any size and shape.
We meet once a month when group members bring along examples of collectables beginning with a choice of two letters.
A VISIT TO THE ALLEN GALLERY At the Allen gallery in Alton we had a talk from one of the Hampshire museums curators. She showed us various collectable items including an agricultural workers smock, a child's embroidered dress, an antique pistol (all from the 18th century) and also a range of ceramics from different centuries and countries. On completion we viewed their gallery which houses one of the South's most outstanding ceramics collection of English, continental and oriental pottery, porcelain and tiles from 1250 to the present day. We also witnessed some conservation work going on. We had lunch at a local hostelry where we met up with some members of Alton u3a and swopped stories and ideas. After that we went on to visit the Curtis museum - also in Alton - where, amongst their extensive displays, we learned about the origin of "Sweet Fanny Adams". A good time was had by all and we came away much more knowledgeable about antiques and collectables.
Art History is the academic study of visual arts : paintings, sculpture, architecture, etc. although we tend to focus more on painting in AH2. We decide on our two annual programmes for the following year in October/November and members take it in turn to research an artist in depth for each programme and give a 45-minute PowerPoint presentation of at least 24 slides (with notes in Microsoft Word to accompany them). We also occasionally watch documentaries and films which have a connection to whichever topic we are studying and sometimes we visit a local exhibition in Portsmouth or Chichester.
In 2026 we will be studying Art in Georgian Britain (1740-1830) for our main programme and The Glasgow Boys during our autumn programme.

Our group started in July 2012 and we meet via Zoom every month so that we can share the presentations each of us puts together in turn.
Recently we have been working through the major art movements of the 20th century and are now moving into the 21st. So over the last few months we have been learning about artists like Louise Bourgeois, Ai Wei Wei and Andy Goldsworthy.
This group is for anyone of any ability who wants to tap into the creative side of their brain and produce some art. We are a group of mixed ability, always ready to help each other and offer encouragement. Most of all, we enjoy getting together to be creative. Each session, members are invited to either work on their own project or take on the suggested topic and challenge of the week. Any media can be used - pencil, charcoal, paints, coloured pencils, collage or anything else you feel you want to experiment with. The venue has a sink with hot and cold water, making it ideal for using paints. Each person has space to be creative with their materials and the room is very light and airy. The cost of hiring the room is shared equally between the group members. Refreshments are available to purchase at the venue. Sometimes we collaborate on a piece of work, such as our group’s name banner above or the ‘old master’ painting below.
We are a small, friendly group who meet in a member’s house on the 2nd Friday of each month.
We enjoy ourselves looking at works of art of all kinds and from different eras. We choose a different subject or artist to look at each month and we each bring something to add to the discussion. This is a lot easier these days with the help of the Internet but members also like to chose something from their own library or their own library or the public library.
We are not experts and regularly have great fun disagreeing with the critics.
