Each member brings one or two items of music (CD, USB stick, etc.) where they are played and discussed. All music genres are acceptable - except modern Rap, etc!
We meet once a month to enjoy listening to music - pop, soul, blues, country, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s or even current music; from Elton John to the Rolling Stones, from Fleetwood Mac to Carole King, from Joni Mitchell to the Hollies, from Manfred Mann to Emmylou Harris and sometimes we are introduced to artists that are new to most of us! Each member of the group selects a handful of songs to share with the others, and it is a really fun way to spend a sociable and entertaining time together.
It is a well-documented fact that music can make us feel uplifted, contented and can improve our health, too. Whether performing it or listening to it, music can increase your happiness (as well as the happiness of those around you). Music can lift the spirits and science has now shown it has a physical effect on our bodies too.

A BRIEF LOOK AT THE A, B & C OF “WACKY WEDNESDAYS”
ACTIVITIES The band has a repertoire of approximately 300 songs of all types but, in essence, with a little practice can take on any song presented to it; not always with complete success, I might add. It performs at venues over an area stretching from Steep south to Portsmouth and Southsea and east to Chichester. The band has yet to venture west of Denmead! The band sees its activity as being good for both health and wellbeing, not only for band members but also for members of the public attending live performances. That is why the band particularly enjoys entertaining elderly hospital patients and care home residents.
BEGINNINGS The band was formed on 3rd April 2013 with just 6 members in attendance. A year later there were 17 members, a good sign for the future. It’s first live performance was in the August of 2013 when it entertained attendees at the U3A Open Day event. There was another notable performance for U3A members in 2014 at The Sacred Heart Church, Waterlooville, and 2015 saw Wacky Wednesdays perform its first paid performance at the Denmead Village Show.
CURRENTLY Since those ‘heady days’ the band has grown in strength and ability and currently has a membership of 23 ukulele players, with a couple of banjuleles available to provide appropriate music style when needed; if you play a ukulele you can also play a 4-string banjo, sometimes referred to as a ‘banjulele’, because tuning is identical. The band's repertoire of songs has increased considerably and is still growing. Furthermore, invitations to perform have also increased to the extent that, prior to the pandemic, each year presented the band with up to 24 bookings. Any payments received now go to the band's chosen charity - the Rowans Hospice in Purbrook, where we have entertained the patients. We remained undaunted during the Covid Pandemic and met every Wednesday forenoon on Zoom. With the Government's eventual modifying of the Covid restrictions we returned to normality and resumed practice sessions every Thursday afternoon at Lovedean Village Hall from 2-4 PM. Bookings also returned with 23 during 2022. 2023-2025 were a little quieter with an average of 12 bookings. With many ukulele bands now in the area competition for concerts is stiff.

We first got together in September 2013 and we're still singing our hearts out! Everyone is welcome to join this group for fun afternoons of singing, learning songs from all around the world. It's not a question of whether you can or can't sing - it's whether you want to sing! Come along and have a go! Singing is serious fun and there will never be a waiting list - the more the merrier!
There are no auditions, no need to read music and absolutely no experience required!
Singing provides great health benefits - it lowers blood pressure, improves breathing, helps reduce stress and boosts the immune system - it is a "no brainer" - you just come along and breathe!
Group members share the costs of our professional teacher and hall hire; however, your first visit is a taster and is free of charge or any commitment.
Below are some images taken from a concert we gave to Waterlooville u3a members at Sacred Heart Church in 2014. You can listen to our performance here.
We are a group with an interest in folk and roots music. Each meeting has a theme, chosen in rotation by members of the group, and we each choose three songs to fit the theme. Usually we find our tracks on YouTube and a playlist is then compiled for us to watch and listen to prior to the meeting at which we discuss the tracks. Sometimes we are introduced to new music and musicians; sometimes we encounter old ‘friends’. Recent topics include Real or Imagined People, Travelling Shows and Showman and Love Gone Wrong.
We are a small friendly group that started up in March, 2024. We get together once a month and listen to various Country & Western music tracks chosen by each group member. The genre is quite wide-ranging, we listen to artists old, new and in between and there is a lot of chit chat about the various tracks and artists involved. Some members of the group play guitars and sing their selections.
This group is suitable for those who have a bit of Line Dancing experience as well as those who are starting out on their Line Dancing journey. Not only is it good for your health, it’s fun too! We go through several dances each session, some slow, some fast and regularly add new ones to our repertoire as we go along (that's when we all end up facing different directions!).
