The card game Canasta is said to originate from South America and spread to the States and to Europe over 60 years ago which is why there are many variations to the play, but the basic rules remain similar. The game (using two or three decks of cards) can be played by individual members but more usually and preferred as a team game of four in a partnership. This can be adapted to suit the number of players present on the day. Canasta is an easy card game to learn and once mastered played with a dash of competitive spirit but in a friendly fashion.
We are a well-established social and friendly group who, over the years, have become very experienced players. The card game Canasta is said to originate from South America and spread to the States and to Europe over 60 years ago which is why there are many variations to the play, but the basic rules remain similar. Two of our founding members took many hours in putting together an acceptable set of rules from the variations which are now being used by our Canasta groups The game (using two or three decks of cards) can be played by individual members but more usually and preferred as a team game of four in a partnership. This can be adapted to suit the number of players present on the day. In this group we pick our partners out of the hat so as to get good circulation. Canasta is an easy card game to learn and once mastered played with a dash of competitive spirit but in a friendly fashion.
We started on 8th Sept 2008 at Cowplain Bowling Club. It was so cold that we moved to a Mrs Robinson's house in 2009. Then we got too big and hired a room in Merchistoun Hall. THEN we got so big that the floor boards could not cope and so moved on to the Acorn centre where we have been since.
The bridge group goes from strength to strength. We are a group of mixed ability, enthusiastic, friendly players. Beginners, restarters and improvers are welcome to join us.
Group members pay a small sum per week to cover the cost of the venue hire.
Our small and friendly group meet every 3rd Monday of the month throughout the year; tea and biscuits provided. At the moment we try our hand at Scrabble, Rummikub and Boggle but we are always open to new ideas.
For those of you who are not familiar with Rummikub, it is a numbers game played with tiles instead of cards. You play your tiles as you would with the card game Rummy. Rules are very simple to pick up and as you progress it becomes quite strategic and tactical but great fun.
We are always open to new games and if anyone has an old favourite they like they are welcome to bring it along to relive and share old memories of days spent around the living room table.
We are a friendly group who meet twice a month to play a range of non-traditional (Modern) Board Games, which require a mix of tactics and strategy. Examples of these games are "Carcassone", "Ticket to Ride" and "Puerto Rico".
In some games, the players compete against each other, in others they are a team competing against the game itself. Some games have a board, some have no board but use cards and some build the board as the game is played (tile-laying games). One or two modify the board as the game progresses.
The aim of the Group is to have fun with friends.
2021-Alhambra2021-Carcassone
KINGDOMINO is based on the old favourite, Dominoes, but the tiles have cute pictures depicting a variety of different landscapes (the artwork itself is often a feature of these games!) instead of spots, and the aim is for each player to build a mini-kingdom on a 5x5 grid. Points are scored at the end.
CARCASSONNE This is a tile-laying game, in which the players build the board as the game progresses. Each tile depicts a feature - part of a city, road, or church. Points are scored for each completed feature.
This group started in September 2021 and is suitable for beginners and experienced players alike. It is a two-player game where each player has fifteen pieces that move between twenty-four places according to the roll of two dice.
