Bird watching at Langstone - Tues 25th Feb 2020
Sixteen hardy types were not put off by doom-mongering warnings of yet more rain and wind, and were rewarded with (mostly) very pleasant weather for a walk around the bird haunts of Langstone, led by our resident bird expert. Mary managed to seek out, and identify, (by name, sex and whether they had winter or summer plumage), just about every type of bird in the area including mallard, coot, swans, moorhens, a heron, a dunnock, widgeon, brent geese, little egrets, pintails, AND mergansers. A hearty and excellent value for money lunch at the Royal Oak gave us a chance to mull everything over and conclude that we had been very lucky, not only with the birds but also with the weather. Our smugness lasted as far as the Hayling end of Langstone Bridge when the heavens opened and an afternoon on the mudflats turned into a soggy wait at a bus stop. Needless to say, this was, as always, enlivened by Bus tripper resilience and banter.
Mary Rose Guided Tour - Tues 21st Jan 2020
With memories of 3 planks of wood rising out of the ocean in 1982, expectations of what awaited us at the Mary Rose Museum were not high. But wow! What a marvellous exhibition. Thousands of exhibits brilliantly displayed giving an insight not only into the Battle of the Solent, (who knew that?), but also into everyday life on board a Tudor warship. Our Guides were first rate and able to put the dizzying array of amazingly well preserved artefacts into context, greatly adding to our understanding and enjoyment. Fabulous.
